Since June of 2007, the Paratransit Education and Advocacy Collaborative, a grant-funded project of the Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities, has been collecting data and gathering input from people with disabilities and their families in 4 large Texas areas regarding their experience relating to public transportation, specifically paratransit and demand-response services. These individuals have been asked in focus groups and with printed, Braille, and online surveys: • To identify the strengths and weaknesses of your current services. • To identify the kinds of trips for which you use or would like to use paratransit services. • How you obtain information about available services in your community. • To what extent cultural differences, language, and your particular disability pose barriers to services. The degree to which each of these issues were answered, of course, has varied. With continued surveying activities in additional communities, PEAC is refining this process. This data assists PEAC in delivering better transportation advocacy tools to Texans with disabilities.
